Power Red Smoothie

This Power Red smoothie combines beets and orange for the perfect balance of sweetness. I love the bounty of wonderful produce that comes with spring, like beets. I know what you're thinking; she wants me to try beets in a smoothie? Beets are a mild, sweet vegetable, and the orange and banana balance it out. Beet root can also help improve athletic performance. So, with a packet of beet root powder included, this is a great pre-workout smoothie as well. Drink up!

Power Red Smoothie

Prep time: 5 mins     |  Cook time:  0 mins   |   Total time: 0 mins
Serves: 12

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup plain unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 cup plain greek yogurt (I prefer Siggi’s 0% plain yogurt as it’s higher in protein)
  • 1/16 avocado (a small slice of an avocado)
  • 1/2 cup beets, sliced (I used Trader Joe’s steamed beets)
  • 1/2 frozen small baby banana(slice before freezing)
  • 1 packet of Elite Beet Root Powder (optional)

Directions

  1. Slice the banana and place it in the freezer overnight. This creates a smoother consistency without the need for additional ice.

  2. Starting with the wet ingredients first, place all ingredients in a high-powered blender. Place any frozen ingredients in last.

  3. Blend into smooth and Enjoy! Note, this recipe works best in a high-powered blender like a Blend-Tec or Vitamix.

  4. With any smoothie, make sure you include adequate protein and fiber.  This will ensure that you are satisfied and not hungry an hour or two later.

  5. For a pre-workout boost, add a packet of Elite Beet Root powder. Beet root is high in nitrate and has been shown to increase oxygen delivery to working muscles, improving athletic performance.
